HowDoYa set up a power of attorney?

A power of attorney lets you choose someone to make decisions on your behalf — for finances, property, or other matters — if you're unable to do so yourself.

What a power of attorney does

  • Authorizes a trusted person (your "agent") to act on your behalf
  • Can cover financial decisions, property, and legal matters
  • Can be limited to specific tasks or broad in scope
  • A "durable" POA stays in effect even if you become incapacitated

What a power of attorney doesn't cover

  • Healthcare decisions — those require a healthcare proxy or directive
  • Actions after death — a will handles that
  • Override a court-appointed guardian or conservator
